This is the time of year when we start getting into the details of helping our couples plan, and the question of favors often comes up. Many people mistakenly think they MUST have a favor for their guests to take home. And this is simply not true. So what are our do's and don'ts about wedding favors?

I usually tell my clients, that if you decided to give a favor, choose wisely. Otherwise, you will be bringing home 100 favors you don't want. Like Dollar Tree candles with personalized stickers on them...don't do it!

If you want to give a favor, either make it very personal, or make it edible. Or both. And make it part of your table decor. Something you can set on the napkin is always better received than a pile of favors at the door as they leave (which they might not notice).

Some successful favor suggestions? Cookies, chocolates, his and hers candy bags, hand-poured candles in antique containers, tea bags, bookmarks, match books, chopsticks, fans. With each of these, there was a story behind the gift or a reason for it.

Some unsuccessful favors? Things that are pre-packaged, maybe with a personalized sticker stuck on it, but other than that have no meaning. We have boxed many of these types of favors back up for the couple to take home. And don't even try anything alcoholic...they may be popular, but they are usually not legal to hand out!

And if you don't give a favor? Your guests won't even notice. After all, you've likely just fed them, given them plenty to drink, and entertained them on the dance floor. They enjoyed an unforgettable evening.

So do yourself a favor...don't stress over the favors!
