If The Walls Could Talk: The Seattle Design Center Then and Now

Recently I had the fun opportunity to attend an open house at the venue where Joe and I had our wedding reception almost 35 years ago, The Seattle Design Center. It was so fun to see it again, and a little surreal.

We chose it because our wedding was very large (300 guests came) and at the time, not very many places could accommodate that kind of crowd other than a hotel, and we didn't want a humdrum ballroom.

Back then, the space was called The Atrium, and I was reminded why when I visited. The ceilings are more than two stories high and covered with skylights, letting in tons of natural light. But I don't remember it feeling vast, maybe because our guests filled it nicely. It just felt celebratory and so much fun.

I still loved it now just as I did then, and the updates they have done only improved it over time. I wondered how many couples have had their weddings there, and for how many was it a day like mine--the very best one possible? If only the walls could talk.
It made me think about all the venues we work in now: will my clients return in a few decades and still love where they got married? I sure hope so! We are blessed to be in so many beautiful places, from resorts and historic locations, to golf and yacht clubs, to farms and barns. They are all special and each possesses a uniqueness that we hope will help define the memories of the day.

We approach each wedding hoping that one day, the couple will look back on their wedding day as the very best day of their lives, like I do. Not only because of who was there and what was done, but maybe the magic of the space they chose will have a little something to do with it as well.
And one day, they might return to find that the magic is still there.
Living on in the memories of the walls.
