I Was Wrong About The Rain

MG Event Design plans and designs weddings in the Pacific Northwest region and is also available for travel anywhere.

If you've followed me for any length of time, you know how I preach about having a rain plan on wedding day, because if you don't, it will rain. And you've also heard me tell you that guests will be upset if they have to sit in the rain or deal with it in any way, because usually that is the case (believe me, we've heard it!).

Last weekend we did a wedding in Gold Bar, Washington at Wallace Falls Lodge (a wonderful venue, by the way). Every day in the week leading up to it, multiple times, we were checking the weather. It didn't look good. At all. Rehearsal rolled around and it poured so hard that we held it indoors (yes, there was a rain plan!).

But, the bride was still hopeful that she could have her outdoor ceremony. You see, she, and 80% of the guests, are from Alaska and a little weather didn't scare them.

But it scared me a little.

I had visions of soaking-wet bridesmaids in dresses with too-little coverage for 48 degrees, and of guests with sopping feet after trudging through the wet grass.

BUT (and there's always a "but" in a story like this!), although it sprinkled a bit on the morning of the wedding, the downpour had stopped for the time being. Not only that, but when the wedding party was ready for pictures, they went outside to BLUE skies!! We were stunned, because that wasn't even close to the forecast!

They finished pictures and it started to sprinkle. The venue staff was on top of it and immediately put covers on the ceremony chairs. Then, when we were ready to seat guests, the rain stopped and every vendor--the DJ, the photographer, the bartenders--helped us dry off the residual raindrops. A better vendor team we couldn't have had.

The wedding party walked down the aisle to dry skies, and just as the bride started walking toward her groom, the sprinkling started again.

BUT (yep, another one!), she had wisely purchased about 60 clear umbrellas, and they all popped up over the guests to shield them, creating a picture-perfect setting among the trees, mountains, and golden maple leaves. It instantly became one of my favorite wedding memories.

The heavy rain waited to come until dancing started, which seemed pretty fitting. And by then, no one cared.

I was never so happy to be wrong about a rainy wedding.

It was perfect in every way.
